Hi everyone. Ive done a good bit of Worldwake limited. I came in 3rd in a 64 paper sealed release event. Won 3 paper drafts. Won every draft my friends and i did when we opened and drafted 2 boxes of paper Worldwake. Online so far, I have won 1 WWW and came in 2nd in another WWW. Besides that, i still make mis-picks and take randomness. Read along as i aim to keep the success in Worldwake going.4-3-2-2 queue.
Pack 1 pick 1:
Okay i've watched a lot of WWW and done some. So far my worst experience with the set is coming in 3rd in a 64 man sealed queue. Regardless of that, I dont claim to be that good. I like the lightkeeper in this pack as flying and life is a good combination to find in limited. To top it off, white is simply good. Good permanent removal, good flyers, fun battle tricks. So what did i take.
My Pick:

Like i said I'm not the best. Anyway, for those who doubt this card, it is anti alpha swing and then it swings for the win. Good "cheap" "removal". The drake and the angel are good but I take the trap because i like red in the set even though people are calling it a dead color. Dont listen to those people. They eat kittens.
Pack 1 pick 2:

GOD. Okay in my defense the 10 mana 12/12 eldrazi dude was revealed the day i did this draft and because of that, this card soared from like half a ticket to 3 to "name your price" Its going to be a money card so im taking at least 2 packs back in cash here. Minus that, the tideforce is awesome and i probably would have gone into blue.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 3:

Seriously? Someone to my right is trying to get me into blue and i would be mono blue if i wasnt money hungry. Vapor snare is amazing and hands down a splash at WORST. This card + depths = Scoop from your opponents.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 4:

Hm, my colors are there, kinda. Problem is, i like black and i like flying. 3/2 flyer for an easy 4 casting cost. I just like this card in draft. Tradewinds is awesome in the format as you can block bounce your blocker and bounce their zendikon land creature and use it as removal. Great card. But i take the flyer as it has won for me.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 5:

A lesson in how not to draft. The dread is an amazing dude. Dread reckoning is fun but can be bad if you're full of token generating spells (which i learned this draft) the wind zendikon is great blue agro and the rover is just a 4/4 attacker or a 2/2 blocker generally. Nope who cares about all that goodness. Get in there 3/2 for 3. I like red black agro as the zendikons fit that archtype so easily and putting your opponent into defense / bad chump block mode.. wins.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 6:

Okay im in the right colors. There's very playable red black here. Brigand is a great growing ally even tho i have none at this point. The cullblade is just good as an early beater and good dread reckoning target. There's a rougher and a mysteries too. Grixis is not popular at the table. I took the brigand. This was a wrong pick. If i redo this, i take the culblade.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 7:

Im going for speed? turn 3 attacking 3/3 that wasnt there at the begining of the turn... good plan. Get in my pile.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 8:

Black's open. These guys are good. 2/1 non vanilla for 2... noting the green 2/1 reacher for 2 as well. Almost hated this card feeling i would get more wasps since people undervalue them.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 9:

I mentioned in an earlier pack that i liked this card. Now im taking it. I could take a green sign, but without getting some of those 4/5 baloths for 3 mana.. i dont want to be in green.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 10:

Late playable conditional removal and im taking it.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 11:

No one likes blue here? Again, these guys are zendikon removal and swinging tempo late game.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 12:

I hear good things about this card. I could see it played well in ZZW but theres not too much to be affraid of in WWW to need to maindeck a ricochet trap. But ill take it.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 13:

Late Late Late.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 14:

Late contortion too.
My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 15:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 1:

Bombish rare?.. in my color?.. really playable? This doesnt happen to me. Kazuul, at worst, in my deck is a great dread reckoning target. The ritualist is AMAZING in this format if you're hard black but knowing im RB/u means i will be hard pressed to get more than 1 card from an opponent here.
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 2:

Fixing. Worth a ticket or two. Aggro beater when i dont have a spell to play on a turn?.. SURE! Another ritualist. Hopefully i dont face a mono black deck.
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 3:

Okay, there were some late black zendikons in that last pack. Someone might pick this up, but having 2 dread reckonings and some zendikons in your graveyard.. not a good situation to be in. Plus the card puts you in a "play a creature and pass or swing and pass the turn" situation. You need to make the right choice in those situations or you're going to lose. I take the eye here. I am 100% splashing that vapor snare and i need something to fix for it. This is my chance and i take it.
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 4:

I am nt a fan of Cosi ravager as i feel its slower and doesnt really get in more damage than the rougher will in an agro deck. Altho, Vapor snare on key makes cosi's really good but i take the goblin 3/2
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 5:

Great green and not much for me. I take the battlesinger and see if the allies fall into place. There's no other option but to cut some green .
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 6:

Marshtreader is bad for me, but my aim is to make even a fast white deck in the format be on defense early. I take the zendikon as its fast and evasive. Its in my splash. May or may not make it in.
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 7:

S L A V E R I N G N U L L S. Enough said. Agro red black that makes your opponent lose his creature early or discard cards? This card is off the chain. Speedy click and i see it in my pile.
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 8:

These came late last pack and it tabled for me. Noting that i dont see any ritualists in these piles coming back to me.
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 9:

I dont like brink of disaster at all. I dont like claws of valakut either. Quicksand is colorless removal that is recurable with zendikons on them. It works if you're behind and if your ahead of your opponent. If you're ahead. swing away and have fun. If your behind. use it as removal and ure quicksand comes back to your hand. Who doesnt want that? These are coming really late in drafts... i dont know why.
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 10:

Thats a really late turtle. Those things rock and own me. Taking another zendikon and with 3 i dont need anymore for my deck.
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 11:

I really dont like cosi apparently. In a mirror since i see some black is gone... I could use this dude..
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 12:

Selective memory hasnt found a home in anything yet.. vintage.. legacy.. classic.. standard.. extended.. WHIFF ... but who knows. Regardless, ill take another trap on the offhand chance i run into a removal deck... even though this card does not work against my main worry in searing blaze. It does work against smothers though
My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 13:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 14:

Pack 3 pick 1:

There's a card here for me in the zendikon crusher which i like less than black zendikon because there are too many 2/x creatures and not many 3/x creatures. This card allows your opponent make a fair trade for 2 damage and a creature. The 3/3 black one smiles at the 2/x's and eats away early until your opponent has taken too much damage to recover.
The archon here is not the "deck" pick. But i dont know what its worth (probably nothing) but it can win games and with me passing lightkeepers and the multikicking flyers all over the place... this would just wreck any agro start i might have.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 2:
![]()
A baloth and TRASH. Colorless removal #2 get in my deck. BTW i dislike skittering lizards after playing with them. They are great topdecks but i have played with them and did not like them.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 3:

WOW this pack is still loaded. removal, 2/1 first strike lifelinkers, ally tramplers, on color main deckable artifact hate with damage to boot... BUT theres a seering blaze. goes straight in. Amazing card for any red player.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 4:

I have a crush on this sexy wasp. I take them when i can because they really do just win.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 5:

Nice! i originally did not like this card but after playing with it, it wrecks when your opponent doesnt see it coming and swings with 2 dudes. It also gets rid of one big dude when your opponent is swinging with something huge. The mana cost is a little rough, but in the right deck it can be your crutch. Against white, its about the best battle trick available.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 6:

Nothing another quicksand. Okay to #3 i go.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 7:

Always happy to see these guys when i play red black.. again, great agro card. I am missing more removal in smothers / seeriung blazes / urge to feeds to make these guys get through easier, but im okay with that.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 8:

#5... kills these pesky marsh swampwalkers i keep seeing that are eyeing up my deck.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 9:

This tabled? Straight hating this card. it is too good but no one is in white blue then.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 10:
![]()
Too many.. too many. What is everyone's opinion on pulse tracker? If i had some more cullblades and urge to feed or two i would be picking them up but i dont like them.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 11:

Sure, late brigand. I pass the scrapper which i should have taken really. Good sideboard card at this point since i dont have too many allies.. but the brigand is agro. I take it.
My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 12:

Hate for celestial colonnade if i happen to run into one.. or just a green 6/4 zendikon deck.

Okay so i have some red black and blue to figure out here.
This is what i come up with:
I run 18 lands because 3 are quicksands and i am running 2 zendikons. I never want to be stuck on 2 lands because i will likely have a zendikon or a quicksand in hand which makes my early game fail. Also pilgrims eye gets a land out of my deck so i can at least thin it down to 17 which is my usual strategy.
Round one game one: Starting hand:
KEEP! And i'm on the play.. and feeling happy about the deck i made. My opponent keeps his hand. I drop the reaches with turn 3 attacking nulls and zendikon in my immediate future. in response to my main phase ending.... DOH! opponent disconnects and times out. Wow, one game i want to play and i cant. I cant complain. If my deck draws like this all the time then i wont have a problem. I get 2 packs now and, possibly even better for me, my next opponent only knows i run lavaclaw reaches... good for me.
Round 2 game 1: Victim of mtgo game save. Recollection: Win on turn 4 to scoop due to 2 slavering nulls with a swamp out and playing a jagwasp swap against an open board.
Round 2 game 2: Start:
Talk about consistency.
On the play and my opponent goes to 6 cards and drawing into a mountain makes my hand nuts. Turn 4 and hes already at 15 and i attack into his pilgrim's eye with a slavering nulls and a zendikon since i have the 2nd slavering in hand. and searing blaze. I hit his face and his 1/1 flyer with the blaze and at the end of turn 4 hes at 7 and im sitting at 20.
He drops an arbor elf and a 2/2 swampwalking vampire and is tapped out with an unequipped kitesail on board. I stay aggro and swing trading the elf for my nulls and takes three. I then drop a bojuka brigand and slaver nulls #2. My opponent says he has 2 bestial menace in hand and his one forest isn't helping him. I reply stating that if he held the elf to untap and play the menace, he would have died. Some more trading ensues and i am left with a 3/3 zendikon agaist his 2/3 creeper after the exchange. I drop a jagwasp swarm after combat. He draws. Complains that my deck it too nuts and concedes.
2-0 on the match and 3 packs.. lets go for 4.
I face Green / Red creature assault.
Sorry, but im getting lazy and these were really long games.
Game one is a melee of creatures trading wit both of our decks performing at premium ability.
My decks backup plan finally shows through as dread reckoning recurs my swarms to remove his last creature in play since i snared another. Eventually the board becomes 2 creature to 2 and life totals are him at 9 and me at 8. I banisher 3/3 his 6/4 zendikon on the play i mention earlier in the draft recap. A play i greatly needed.
My nemesis trap catches him off guard and gets rid of two greypelt green allies at 3/3 and 4/4. I got for the alpha swing and bam. He casts his own stone idol trap. He then swings with idol trap against one of my slavering nulls... and i am at 2 to his 9. Thank god the last card in hand is my own Stone idol trap. Oh the hilarity.
He swings and promptly makes a frown face on his expected win. I crack back against an open board getting him to 3. Yes i held back the nulls as he has 3 cards in hand and any skitter of lizards takes me for lethal. I have a vapor snare which does not protect me against skitter or other haste dude. I hold until i draw a creature and he has no played anything. I swing in bringing him down to 1 and then drop the swarm. He draws and conceeds stating "why didnt you swing last turn!!!.. i would have won " and i pat myself on the back for thinking... for once.
Game 2. Crazy plays of magic ensue that should not happen in two agro decks. We both read eachother's hands too well and know what to expect. The game goes on for some time until turn 20 I have him at 1 and i am at 12 after a smack down of searing blazes. I cast the trap at the end of his turn for a 6/12 beater along with 7 other creature on my side against his 3. I swing. He states "i am lucky he didnt draw his chain reaction" But i had 2 creature in hand and aether tradewinds to boot to save another. I was just very cautious. I knew i could have alpha swung about 4 turns earlier but knowing he had the same trap and searing blazes.. i did not want to chance anything.
Summary: Don't listen to those people who eat kittens and hate red, You just have to know what and when to play it. This deck was so much fun. It was either turn 3 win or it turned into grixis control.
I win 4 packs. A new avatar that doesnt say anything on it yet? Aanowan the ruin sage avatar seriously doesnt have anything on it yet.. whats with that?? Eye of ugin is going up and i will sell it when the time is right.
If i ever stop being lazy and video these matches, i would show this one because i actually played properly and avoided greedy swings. It would also give newer players examples of knowing if they are supposed to swing with zendikons turn 3 or 4 or if they should cast our creatures. Its all about the situation and your next two possible plays.
Worldwake is strong and a fun draft format in triple Worldwake. I dont think i will do much zzw beacuse the set has been overdrafted and cards are falling in value. Thanks for reading and leave some comments!. Good luck to everyone in your drafts unless you're playing me in the finals.

Hey Envy,
Nice Draft and good job on winning some packs.
I have a few idea on what may have been your downfall on you color selection, I noticed a lot of amazing W/U come you way. I have found that White is very good in WWK (3), this is how I would have drafted if I was in your position. Again its not bashing red, (i love red in wwk) its just how I might have drafted. Tell me what you think.

This would basically be my B/W deck. It’s hard for me to jump into red without a Cunning Sparkmage, but still i feel red should never be ruled out. I have found that flying is just amazing the more and more I play in Limited. Also almost everyone is looking for black and thats why Marsh Treaders should be very helpful against black. As for this U/W deck it lacks removal. I would have wanted to see more Iona’s, but thats such a late removal. Speed is what is in this U/W deck. The 2/1 merfolk’s are very useful and are even more powerful with a Kite equipped. I’m sure there are some picks that I missed but thats how I would have went about my draft. The Pulse Tracker is a good card, I really enjoy the turn 1 drop and the swing for 2 on turn 2. He helps you get the extra damage in when you need it the most.
By the way this is my first post! I really enjoy this site and plan on posting more!

Made some grammar errors, sorry. U/W deck*
I made A LOT of grammar errors. Wow. I am usually anal about that too. I read through this, and I couldnt stand the mistakes… AND I WROTE IT!
I did this really late and really quick one night. I guess i didn’t proof read at all. Sorry everyone!
The next one i write will be clean.
As for the U/W deck, I agree with the both of you. Greed was the inspiration of my deck as i seem to have rare drafted. I just took “Timmy” cards in my first 3 picks of each pack. The only thing that saved me was my knowledge of the set during game play and rationalizing out my opponent’s possible hand.
One of my friends was hanging out with me during this draft and i even made a comment stating: “I dont know why i am passing all of this rediculous blue white to make a sick skies deck. I bet it’s going to beat me round 1″
Things like this happen i suppose. You have success with a color and you keep gunning for it, but i try to avoid doing that. Also, being a new set, i dont mind passing effectiveness for a few dumb rares that might have some trade value down the road.
Anyway, thanks for the comments.
“I hear good things about this card. I could see it played well in ZZW but theres not too much to be affraid of in WWW to need to maindeck a ricochet trap.”
One thing I don’t think a lot of people realize is you could use Ricochet Trap on an opponent’s Zendikon (As it’s being cast) to redirect it to your own land. I don’t know if this makes it maindeck worthy, but it does seem that in WWW everyone is playing Zendikons so it’s something to consider.
First time commenting, really enjoy the site, and its been helpful to me in preparing for drafts.
I played a casual paper draft WWW over the weekend and would add my opinion that red black aggro is very strong in this set. I think Bojuka brigand is underrated. Possibly the top black common creature. Especially if you’re able to get a couple of them.
I ended up dominating with a fast attacking red and black deck, including 3 Bojuka brigands and 3 Akoum battlesingers. Now, part of my success was cause i first picked a basilisk collar and got passed a cunning sparkmage. However, i won multiple games with the following sequence.. turn two brigand, turn three another brigand, attack with 3/3. turn four battlesinger attack with 5/4, 4/3 and 2/1. At this point theyre usually around 10life, and even if they are able deal with my creatures on the table, some combination of jagwasp swarm, zendikons, direct damage usually finished them off.
the red and black zendikons work really great in this deck. First because hasted and/or trample creatures are excellent topdecks when trying to finish off an opponent. Second, usually i find these speed decks have have a surplus of land towards the end of the game going to no good use. However with the zendikons, even running 18land i rarely had wasted land even at the end of the game. Also the landfall requirement of tombhex and searing blaze means a late land topdeck may be just what you need.
Another thought, I try to go into draft with an open mind, but i would really enjoy playing a white blue mill deck in this format. 2 halimar excavators in play + join the ranks = 16cards?? guardian zendikon, calcite snapper, rest for the weary, aether tradewinds, and the excavators slow down the game. hopefully pickup a white or blue bomb, game should be slow enough for you to get it out, and if they used up their creature destruction on your excavators.. you got a couple ways to win.
overall I feel the draft went okay.
Personally, I felt the intro was a bit much.
“I came in 3rd in a 64 paper sealed release event. Won 3 paper drafts. Won every draft my friends and i did when we opened and drafted 2 boxes of paper Worldwake. Online so far, I have won 1 WWW and came in 2nd in another WWW.”
We’re here to analyze your submitted drafts. The fact that you won of XYZ tournaments doesn’t add anything. It certainly doesn’t justify bad picks, and it isn’t important when looking at your good picks. Frequent readers will quickly discern good vs bad drafters. This is perhaps why draftbetter’s posts are so much easier to read. It’s a simple format. “Here’s my rating. Here’s the draft. Sound explanation of why I made my picks.”
Another thing that really hits me the wrong way is people explaining in-depth their rare picks. Just be upfront, we all do it. Just say “Money Draft. Otherwise would have picked .” Rather than, “well with that new card coming out, and according to my 2004 Farmer’s Almanac, and with the price of green futures hitting an all time high, and the gold market being this low, Eye of Ugin is a sure win.” Money drafts are to be ignored in terms of drafting skill. It shouldnt even matter to us how much the card is worth. It could be a crypt of agadeem you needed for your standard deck. Just say so, so we know not to factor it into your draft.
As an actual critique, P3P1 is an awful pick. Hate drafting first pick is silly. You have Crusher Zendikon, Hammer of Ruin, and Quicksand. I could understand if you have no playables, but all 3 of these are okay. Personally, I would have picked Hammer of Ruin.
@wintirmute – Everyone has this desire, myself included. But, it becomes a question of drafting for “coolness” or drafting to win. At the end of the day, U/W allies isn’t really a deck in WWW. Definitely not as strong as Kazandu Blademaster back when white had him. So there’s never really a time where you can draft U/W Allies and “pick up a few Excavators along the way.” Where your worst case scenario is an alternate win strat. Here, you have to go all out to draft the excavators and there’s no telling whether there will even be enough of them opened. You’re much better off with U/W skies if you’re in those colors.
